Why an elbow hurts, or The whole truth about myositis

Myositis is a disease of office workers and middle-aged women. This condition is familiar to many: aching pain suddenly appears in the muscles, it is rapidly growing and now any movement causes pain. So manifests myositis – an ailment that can permanently incapacitate. Most of us believe that the cause of myositis is drafts. It’s true. But not complete.

Where does the wind blow from?
Often myositis provokes infections – SARS, influenza, chronic tonsillitis … And very often – prolonged tension of individual muscle groups. It is no accident that myositis is attributed to the professional diseases of office workers who sit at the monitor all day.

The culprits of inflammation can also be parasites that penetrate the muscles, for example, with trichinosis, echinococcosis. And such a form of the disease as purulent myositis, as a rule, is a complication of intramuscular injections when an infection gets into the muscles. By the way, in recent years, the number of precisely such complications that a person earns when he gets to the hospital has been growing. Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause myositis.

Not as simple as it sounds
The most common types of myositis are cervical and lumbar. Trying to cope with a sudden pain, we often take a tube with a warming ointment. And, according to experts, we are making a big mistake. Because under the mask of a “banal” myositis, something much more serious may be hiding. After all, pain in the neck, shoulders, between the shoulder blades can occur due to displacement of the intervertebral discs, hernia of the spinal disc. Yes, and lower back pain is also not always “muscle”. Judge for yourself. Once in a lifetime, cervical myositis has happened to almost everyone, and for many, more than once. Symptoms Dull pain, most often covering only one side of the neck – right or left. Pain can be given to the back of the head, to “shoot through” from the ear to the shoulder, to “get stuck” between the shoulder blades. Sometimes there are pains in the temples, forehead. In rare cases, they extend along the entire length of the arm, to the tips of the fingers, causing a feeling of numbness. The mobility of the cervical vertebrae with myositis usually remains normal, but may be limited due to pain.

Possible problems. This type of myositis is very insidious. If it is launched or improperly treated, it affects the neighboring muscles of the larynx, pharynx, and diaphragm. And if coughing and shortness of breath suddenly appear with such myositis, emergency hospitalization is necessary – otherwise the patient has a risk of dying from suffocation.

Myositis of the lumbar muscles is a very common cause of back pain. Symptoms With myositis, the pain is not as severe as with lumbago (lumbago), mostly aching. Another difference – with myositis, the pain does not subside even at rest, and with movement, feeling, pressure on the muscles intensifies. In some chronic diseases (for example, tonsillitis), metabolic disorders, myositis often causes joint pain. Possible problems. Under the mask of lumbar myositis, kidney disease may be hidden. If within 7-10 days the back pain has not disappeared, it is necessary to consult a doctor, pass a general blood test and a urinalysis.

Wagner’s study and play for “orchestra”

No, no, this has nothing to do with music, but the most direct thing with myositis: it can be one that many of us have not even heard of. Its severe and rather rare form is dermatological myositis, it is also called Wagner’s disease. Such myositis predominantly “attacks” middle-aged women. How to explain this? Researchers are still at a loss, but there is a well-reasoned version: a genetic predisposition.

The risk of getting sick increases with stress, frequent colds, hypothermia and … love for tanning. With dermatitis myositis, in addition to muscle pain, rashes of purple or red appear on the skin of the face, hands, upper body. Subfebrile temperature can hold (slightly above 37 degrees), patients begin to lose weight, complain of weakness. In some, the disease, which is quite difficult to treat, progresses very quickly, in others it develops gradually, manifested by muscle sagging, shortening, and metabolic disturbances (calcium salts accumulate in the body).

A very insidious form of the disease is polymyositis, which affects several muscle groups at once. Scientists do not yet know what causes this disease. With an acute onset, symptoms are similar to many infectious ones: fever, palpitations, sweating, headache and malaise. But most importantly, muscles, especially the pelvis and hips, weaken. With a gradual development, the muscles slowly but surely lose strength: at first it is noticeable only with small loads, but then the condition begins to deteriorate sharply: it is difficult for a person to get out of bed, to get out of a chair …

Different approaches
Fortunately, severe varieties of myositis are rare, and the treatment of acute is not a particular problem. To quickly relieve pain, they often use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that warm the ointments.
